Memory Sessions

A series of memory sessions on Naples, Shanghai, Mumbai, Tangier, Salvador, Lisbon and London took place in London between August and November 2012 in response to Alda Terracciano’s video sound installation Streets of… 7 cities in 7 minutes.Click a city name to find out more

  NAPLES

Memories of Naples were explored with people coming from this city or with knowledge of it, during two memory sessions that took place on Thursday 25th October 2012 at  Casa Italiana S.Vincenzo Pallotti in central London and on Thursday 22nd November 2012 at Red Gallery in East London. The video extracts of this section document the discussion and people’s views on Naples’s street life, ancestral traditions, religious celebrations, such as the popular Saint Gennaro’s procession, and the significance of body language in people’s communication.

SHANGHAI

Memories of Shanghai were explored with people coming from this city or with knowledge of it, during two memory sessions that took place on Wednesday 21st November 2012 at Ravensbourne College, in South-East London and on Tuesday 27th November 2012 at the East London Chinese Community Centre, in East London. The video extracts of this section document the discussion and people’s views on Shanghai’s ancestral traditions, religious practices, such as ancestors worshipping, as well as the importance of outdoor life, exercising in the parks and traditional games.

MUMBAI

Memories of Mumbai were explored with people coming from this city or with knowledge of it, during a memory session that took place on Wednesday 22nd August 2012 at the Asian Centre (The Council of Asian People), in North London. The video extracts of this section document the discussion and people’s views on Mumbai’s ancestral traditions, the colonial past, street life and the importance of food in people’s everyday life.

TANGIER

Memories of Mumbai were explored with women coming from this city or with knowledge of it, during a memory session that took place on Friday 19th October 2012 at the Al-Hasaniya Moroccan Women Centre, in West London. The video extracts of this section document the discussion and people’s views on Tangier’s ancestral traditions, celebrations such as weddings, and customs such as traditional women’s clothing, the slow pace of Moroccan life and the international character of Tangier.

SALVADOR

Memories of Salvador were explored with people coming from this city or with knowledge of it, during two memory sessions that took place on Thursday 11th October and on Thursday 15th November 2012 at Centro Português de Apoio à Comunidade Lusófona, in South London. The video extracts of this section document the discussion and people’s views on Salvador’s ancestral memories, religion, rituals, celebrations, food and music and in particular their connection to the Candomblé tradition, which derives from African culture.

LISBON

Memories of Lisbon were explored with people coming from this city or with knowledge of it, during two memory sessions that took place on Thursday 23rd August and on Thursday 11th October 2012 at Centro Português de Apoio à Comunidade Lusófona, in South London. The video extracts of this section document the discussion and people’s views on Lisbon’s ancestral traditions, the colonial past, Fado music, religious celebrations, such as Saint Anthony’s procession, the importance of family ties and of food in people’s everyday life.

LONDON

Memories of original cities and of London were explored with people living in this city during two memory sessions that took place on Thursday 22nd November and Thursday 29th  November at URBAN DIALOGUES 2012 a festival  organised by  3 Faiths Forum at Red Gallery, in East London where the “Streets of… 7 cities in 7 minutes” installation was presented. The video extracts of this section document people’s views on the artwork and the way in which different cultures are connected to each other and relate to London and their own diverse backgrounds.

This is such a wonderful project, it’s brought so many people together, and all the accompanying material is absolutely fascinating to watch. It’s a real creative contribution to the bettering of the world we live in. THANK YOU!
